Are you interested in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM)? Are you a member of a school or community club or group with a focus in one of these disciplines? Have you created a project, by yourself, with your class, or with a group that you feel is new, exciting, or innovative?

Use our showcase registration form to submit your project! If selected, your project could be featured at the Third Annual Benjamin Banneker Legacy Awards Gala on November 21, 2008 in Washington, D.C.!

At the 2006 Awards Gala, we featured the West Philadelphia High School electric Vehicle Team photo on right that has built multiple electric cars. The students talked about building electric cars and displayed pictures of their projects. In 2007, the student showcase was expanded to feature individual, class, and club science projects from grades 5-12. This is a tremendous opportunity for students to discuss science with prominent professors and professionals.

At our First Annual Student Showcase students from Noyes Elementary School (Washington, DC), Kelly Miller Middle School (Washington, DC), Benjamin Banneker High School (Washington, DC), and Mckinley Tech High School (Washington, DC), displayed their science projects to hundreds of scientist from various disciplines.

Submission Requirements

Selected student projects will be featured both at the 3rd Annual Awards Gala and on the Banneker Institute website at www.thebannekerinstitute.org. Please submit all projects on our website, by October 24, 2008.

To make our selection, we require :

  • A tri-fold poster board with pictures, descriptions, and/or illustrations that appropriately explain the project, which will be featured at the Awards Gala. Please submit a digital picture of the completed poster board.

  • Digital photographs of the project to be featured at the Gala and on the website. If your project is transportable and can fit on a table with your poster board, please indicate this and we can display your physical project at the Gala.
(Note: You must transport your project to and from the Gala)

  • A brief explanation of your project to be featured on the website. The explanation should be no more than 1000 words and include: what your project is, why you chose to pursue this project, and how it works. You may also include illustrations, either computer-generated or scanned into the computer, to help explain your project.

  • At least one student representative of the team must attend the Awards Gala to stand by your project table, and discuss and answer questions about your project with other Gala attendees. (High School students and their teachers will be given free admission to the Gala but will need to register on The Banneker Institute website to attend.)
