Science Community Nominates for Awards Show

The Benjamin Banneker Institute for Science and Technology is preparing to honor stellar individuals whose work has increased the number of African Americans involved in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. Nomination season for the Benjamin Banneker Legacy Awards is underway.

Last year’s nominees traveled from across the country and represented an array of professions. The six winning finalists included Dr. Ben Carson whose Carson Scholars Fund recognizes and rewards kids for their academic excellence and strong commitment to their community.

Opportunities to nominate for The Benjamin Banneker Legacy Award are open to all via the Banneker website, www.thebannekerinstitute.org. This year the institute is also seeking nominations of special young persons for the Benjamin Banneker Youth Legacy Award. This award recognizes youth in junior high and high school who excel in both STEM studies and service to their communities.

The Benjamin Banneker Legacy Award was established to honor those investing in increasing the size of the pool of black scientists. Recipients may themselves be scientists, but could also include corporations, non-profit organizations, business and community leaders, educators and others who have occasion to affect the life choices that young people make. Do you know of someone who is increasing the number of Black people involved in STEM professions or field of studies? Nominate them for the Benjamin Banneker Legacy Award today!

The Benjamin Banneker Legacy Award is presented at the Annual Awards Gala, this year scheduled for November 7th. We are delighted to announce that Dr. Bill Cosby will return as keynote speaker. This year’s theme is “Celebrating our Passion for Excellence.” This entire program is part of The Decade of Blacks in Science announced in February of this year. To learn more about the Banneker Institute, the Decade of Blacks in Science, and to nominate your favorite scientist for the Banneker Legacy Award, visit the Banneker Institute’s website at www.thebannekerinstitute.org.
